If you’re a girl who loves clothes and shoes and has built up a considerable wardrobe there’s no doubt at some point you’ve run into the issue of not enough space for storage! When I fell in love with my little 1940’s bungalow, I had to come to terms with the fact that a standard walk in closet was not in the cards for me. If this sounds familiar to you, and you’re longing for a bigger closet, why not get creative and use a spare bedroom to create a dream walk in closet!
The secret to converting a traditional bedroom into a walk in closet/dressing room is to think outside the box and find budget friendly options to maximize the space. And, if one day you’ll need the room for say… a nursery, you can create a space that can be easily moved into another room.
We used extendable shower rods with shelf and rod brackets to create an open air closet with a shelf above. The brackets come in various finishes and as long as they are correctly anchored to the wall they hold as much as you can fit! I chose to color code my sweaters, shirts and blazers to create a beautifully organized look and add functionality.
Bookshelves work as easy storage spaces for shoes, purses and sweaters.
With everything pushed up against the walls, I wanted fill the center of the room to make it look complete. I used an old IKEA “Lack” Coffee table to create a boutique store look.
I found a vintage vanity for a great price at a local thrift store (I had to see the potential behind its original green exterior). Once we painted it white and gave the drawer pulls a makeover, it’s completely revitalized and now my favorite place of all time to get ready in the morning (our cat’s too!).
If you have a built in closet in the room, you can use it for additional hanging space or use it to hang the week’s outfits. I can’t tell you how much time this saves me from searching for something to wear to work in the mornings. A rolling closet rack also works great if you have the space to store it in the room.
Don’t forget to add a great light to complete the room. We DIY’d an old 70’s chandelier for under $50!
And finally, every good closet needs a full length mirror. I found this one from IKEA. I love how tall and wide it is, and how it actually makes you look true to size – not like you’re in a carnival fun house.

You did a really good job here. How much did it cost in total?
Thank you Krista! All in, including furniture, light, mirror and paint was around $600.00! Compared to the cost of a fancy wardrobe system, it’s a great deal to DIY it!
